15 Fertiliser Ships Safely Cross Strait of Hormuz, Bringing Relief to India's Supply Chain
Government says vessels carrying urea, DAP and sulphur are on their way to India despite Middle East tensions, while natural gas supply to fertiliser plants has been fully restored.
Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and concerns over global supply chains, India has received a major boost to its fertiliser security. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers announced that 15 ships carrying fertilisers and key raw materials have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are now en route to India.
According to the ministry, the shipment includes eight vessels carrying 3.32 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of urea, four ships transporting 2.57 LMT of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), and three vessels loaded with 1.11 LMT of sulphur. In addition, five more ships are scheduled to depart for India, strengthening the country's fertiliser supply ahead of the agricultural season.
Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Jagat Prakash Nadda said that the conflict in West Asia has disrupted global supply chains, pushing up fertiliser prices and increasing shipping times. He added that Indian diplomatic missions abroad have actively coordinated with international producers and suppliers to ensure uninterrupted imports.
The government also confirmed that natural gas supply to fertiliser plants, which had temporarily fallen to around 65%, has now been fully restored to 100%, allowing domestic production to continue without disruption.
To safeguard farmers' interests, the ministry said it is working closely with state governments to ensure transparent distribution and adequate regional availability of fertilisers. It also revealed that India currently holds 197.56 LMT of fertiliser stock, representing more than 51% of the country's annual requirement of 383.9 LMT.
Officials said that the combined efforts of increased imports and sustained domestic production have ensured sufficient fertiliser availability across the country despite global uncertainties.
