UK MPs Raise Concern Over Communications Blackout in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

A group of UK parliamentarians, led by MP Imran Hussain, has written to the UK Foreign Secretary expressing concern over reports of a communications blackout and escalating tensions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

In a letter dated June 8, 2026, addressed to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, the lawmakers highlighted reports of internet and mobile service disruptions, restrictions on communication, and growing political unrest in the region.

The MPs stated that British Kashmiris across the United Kingdom have contacted them, expressing anxiety after being unable to communicate with relatives and loved ones in AJK. According to the letter, the disruption has caused widespread distress among families with close ties to the region.

The parliamentarians also raised concerns over reports of arrests, including British nationals, and an alleged breakdown in dialogue between authorities and representatives of the Joint Awami Action Committee. They warned that communication restrictions in an already tense political environment could worsen uncertainty and undermine public confidence.

The letter urged the UK government to assess the reported developments, support British nationals in the region, and encourage diplomatic engagement to restore communications and resume peaceful dialogue.

Imran Hussain, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, emphasized the importance of de-escalation, peaceful negotiations, and protecting the rights of people affected by the situation.
