PM Narendra Modi Visits Iconic MCG, India to Host First-Ever Big Bash League Match
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground marks a major boost for India-Australia sporting ties, with Chennai set to host the opening match of the 2026 Big Bash League.
During his official visit to Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), one of the most historic venues in world cricket. He was accompanied by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Australia captain Steve Waugh during the visit.
A landmark announcement was made at the MCG to strengthen sporting ties between India and Australia. The opening match of the 2026–27 Big Bash League (BBL) will be played in Chennai this December, marking the first time in history that a foreign domestic cricket league will stage an official match on Indian soil.
The historic fixture will serve as the highlight of the week-long 'G'Day Namaste' festival, which will be held across India. The festival will showcase Australian culture, business, tourism, education, and sports through a series of events aimed at deepening bilateral engagement.
The initiative reflects the growing partnership between India and Australia, with cricket continuing to play a key role in strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
