Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Appointed as India’s 27th Navy Chief
Veteran naval officer with nearly four decades of service vows to strengthen India’s maritime security and defence preparedness.
Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has officially taken charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff of India, marking a new chapter in the leadership of the Indian Navy. He assumed office on May 31, 2026, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi.
A seasoned naval officer with an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades, Admiral Swaminathan has held several key operational and leadership roles within the Indian Navy. Before becoming the Navy Chief, he served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, one of the Navy’s most strategically significant commands. He had also served as the 46th Vice Chief of Naval Staff.
Born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Admiral Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. A graduate of Sainik School, Bijapur, the National Defence Academy, and the Indian Naval Academy, he specialised in Communication and Electronic Warfare during his early years in service.
Over the course of his distinguished career, he commanded several naval warships, including INS Vidyut, INS Vinash, INS Kulish, and the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore. Notably, he also served as the second Commanding Officer of India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, leading the warship during the International Fleet Review in 2016.
Admiral Swaminathan has also held several important staff and training appointments, including Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, Chief of Personnel, and Controller of Personnel Services at Naval Headquarters. His leadership played a key role in naval training and operational safety initiatives.
Recognised for his distinguished service, Admiral Swaminathan has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
As India strengthens its maritime presence in the Indian Ocean region amid evolving security challenges, Admiral Swaminathan is expected to focus on naval modernisation, operational readiness, and indigenous defence capabilities.
