Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Visit India, Talks With PM Modi Scheduled

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing will undertake an official visit to India from May 30 to June 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking his first visit to the country since assuming office.

According to information shared by the Ministry of External Affairs, President Min Aung Hlaing will begin his India tour from Bodh Gaya on Saturday. During the visit, he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 1 to discuss ways to further strengthen relations between India and Myanmar.

The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as regional connectivity, trade, security, infrastructure, and diplomatic engagement between the two neighboring countries. The visit is being seen as significant amid evolving geopolitical developments in the region.

However, the proposed visit has drawn criticism from Myanmar’s opposition National Unity Government (NUG), which strongly opposed the invitation extended to Min Aung Hlaing. The opposition group described him as a “terrorist military leader” and accused him of carrying out actions against the people of Myanmar.

In its statement, the NUG alleged that the Myanmar military leadership has been acting against democratic values and suppressing public voices within the country. The criticism reflects the continuing political tensions and instability in Myanmar following the military takeover.

Despite the controversy, the visit is expected to proceed as scheduled, with both nations aiming to strengthen strategic and diplomatic cooperation.
