El Niño Strengthens in 2026: What It Means for Global Weather and India's Monsoon

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become significantly warmer than normal. It typically develops every two to seven years and has far-reaching effects on weather patterns across the globe.
Under normal conditions, trade winds blow from east to west, pushing warm ocean water toward Indonesia and Australia. During an El Niño event, these winds weaken or even reverse, allowing warm water to spread across the central and eastern Pacific. Sea surface temperatures can rise by 2°C or more, disrupting global atmospheric circulation.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), El Niño is strengthening rapidly in 2026, with a high probability of becoming a strong event between July and September. The combination of El Niño and ongoing climate change could further increase global temperatures and intensify extreme weather events.
The impacts of a strong El Niño extend far beyond the Pacific Ocean. It can alter rainfall patterns, trigger heatwaves, and increase the risk of floods and droughts in different parts of the world. The WMO warns that heavy rainfall is likely across the central and eastern Pacific, while below-normal rainfall or drought conditions may affect the Indian subcontinent, Australia, Indonesia, northern South America, and parts of Africa. Southern Africa could experience above-average rainfall, whereas northern regions may face drier-than-normal conditions.
As the climate continues to warm, scientists are closely monitoring El Niño's development, as its effects could have significant consequences for agriculture, water resources, food security, and disaster preparedness worldwide.
