Severe storms and heavy rainfall that lashed several parts of Uttar Pradesh late Thursday night caused widespread destruction and multiple casualties across the state. In a major tragedy, an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River in Hamirpur district collapsed, killing at least six people, while several others are feared trapped beneath the debris.
According to officials, the bridge was being constructed between Mora Kandar Parsani in the Lalpura area and Naithi and Kandaur villages in Kurara region. The nearly one-kilometre-long bridge reportedly collapsed around 3 AM during intense rain and strong winds.
Reports suggest that several workers and local residents were sleeping beneath the structure at the time of the incident, leading to the high number of casualties. Rescue teams were immediately rushed to the site, and search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate those who may still be trapped.
Authorities have confirmed six deaths so far, while emergency personnel continue clearing debris and conducting rescue efforts under challenging weather conditions. Senior district officials and disaster response teams are monitoring the situation closely.
The storm has also caused damage in several other regions of Uttar Pradesh, with reports of fallen trees, power disruptions, and waterlogging emerging from multiple districts. Local administration officials have been directed to remain on high alert and provide immediate assistance to affected residents.
Further investigation into the bridge collapse and the exact cause of the accident is expected once rescue operations are completed.
