Chhattisgarh Waqf Board Announces Approval Rule for Interfaith Muslim Marriages

The Chhattisgarh Waqf Board has announced a new regulation that will require prior approval for interfaith marriages involving Muslim men or women. The decision, set to come into effect from August 2026, has sparked widespread discussion.

According to the board, if a Muslim man or woman wishes to marry a non-Muslim, they must first obtain permission from the Chhattisgarh Waqf Board. Without the board's approval, the marriage will not be permitted under the new guidelines.

The board has also introduced new rules for religious clerics conducting Nikah ceremonies. From August onwards, all Maulanas performing Nikah must register with the Waqf Board. Clerics who fail to register will not be authorised to solemnise marriages.

Officials further stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating these regulations, including unregistered clerics who conduct Nikah or those who disregard the new approval process.

The announcement has drawn attention as it introduces additional administrative requirements for interfaith marriages involving Muslims in the state.
