Mamata Banerjee Alleges 'House Arrest' as Security Deployment Sparks Political Storm in West Bengal
Mamata Banerjee alleged she was stopped from visiting the Baruipur victim's family, while the TMC called the security deployment outside her residence an attack on democracy.
A fresh political confrontation has erupted in West Bengal after former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that she was placed under "house arrest" ahead of her planned visit to Baruipur, where a 12-year-old girl's alleged rape and murder has triggered widespread outrage.
Banerjee had announced that she would travel to Baruipur on July 6 to meet the victim's family and express solidarity. However, heavy security personnel, including central forces, were deployed outside her Kalighat residence in Kolkata, prompting the veteran leader to accuse the administration of preventing her movement.
Calling the action an attempt to silence the opposition, Banerjee said she had effectively been "house arrested" for trying to meet the bereaved family. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also condemned the move, claiming barricades and heavy police deployment were used to stop its chairperson from leaving her residence.
In a statement on social media, the TMC maintained that despite the restrictions, its demand for justice for the victim remains unchanged. The party asserted that Banerjee stands firmly with the victim's family and questioned the necessity of the security measures.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen criticized the administration, asking whether preventing a senior opposition leader from meeting the victim's family was compatible with democratic principles. Senior advocate and TMC leader Baiswanor Chatterjee also questioned the deployment of central forces, arguing that restricting the movement of an opposition leader sends the wrong message in a democracy.
The incident has further intensified the political battle in West Bengal, with the opposition alleging misuse of administrative machinery, while the tragic Baruipur case continues to dominate the state's political discourse.
