DK Shivakumar Takes Action After Becoming Karnataka CM, Announces Big Relief for Students and Youth

PA new political chapter began in Karnataka on Wednesday as senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar took oath as the state’s 24th Chief Minister. Soon after assuming office, Shivakumar chaired his first cabinet meeting and announced major decisions aimed at supporting students and tackling youth unemployment.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister outlined his government’s priorities and unveiled two major initiatives. One of the biggest announcements was the introduction of free bus passes for students across Karnataka.

Shivakumar said that students had raised the issue of transportation expenses during meetings with him, prompting the government to act. He clarified that students would need to submit an application to avail of the free bus pass facility.

Addressing unemployment concerns in the state, the Chief Minister also announced plans to issue an official recruitment calendar for 56,000 government jobs, fulfilling a key promise made by the Congress government.

“We had promised jobs through the government, and we will deliver on that commitment,” Shivakumar said, emphasizing that the move is aimed at providing opportunities to young people struggling with unemployment.

The Chief Minister also addressed months of political speculation surrounding the leadership transition in Karnataka. Speaking to reporters, he said the transfer of power had taken place smoothly and praised former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for honoring his commitment to step down when directed by the party high command.

Rejecting any reports of internal divisions within the Congress party, Shivakumar described the transition as a collective effort and stressed that governance under his leadership would be based on teamwork.

“This Chief Minister’s chair does not belong to one person. Every decision will be collective and taken in the interest of Karnataka’s people,” he said.

Alongside Shivakumar, Dr. G. Parameshwara was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Several senior leaders, including K.H. Muniyappa, K.J. George, M.B. Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, Satish Jarkiholi, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge, U.T. Khader, Eshwar Khandre, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Bairathi Suresh, and Sharan Prakash Patil also took oath as ministers in the new cabinet.
