BCCI Bans Smart Sunglasses and Goggles in IPL 2026 Over Security Concerns
New advisory issued to all 10 IPL teams as board fears misuse of smart wearable technology for communication and recording
In a major decision during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has banned the use of smart sunglasses and smart goggles by players, support staff, and match officials.
The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has issued a fresh advisory to all 10 IPL franchises regarding the restriction. According to the board, concerns have emerged over the potential misuse of smart eyewear for secret communication, video recording, and live streaming during matches and team activities.
The ACSU stated that several technology companies have recently been actively promoting and selling smart sunglasses and goggles to IPL players and franchise staff. These advanced devices reportedly come equipped with features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, calling, messaging, video recording, and internet access.
Due to their communication and recording capabilities, the BCCI has classified these smart devices under the category of communication and recording equipment and has imposed a complete ban on their usage during the tournament.
The move is seen as part of the board’s broader effort to maintain the integrity, security, and anti-corruption standards of the IPL.
