Mexico vs England World Cup Clash Delayed by Storm at Azteca Stadium

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Mexico and England was delayed by one hour on Sunday after a thunderstorm hit the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. FIFA confirmed that the match, originally scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. local time, was pushed back to 7:00 p.m. because of unsafe weather conditions.
This is the second time Mexico's World Cup campaign has been affected by bad weather. Their previous knockout match against Ecuador was also delayed for the same reason.
Mexico entered the match in excellent form, having conceded no goals in four matches so far in the tournament. Playing in front of their home fans, Javier Aguirre's side defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 to book a place in the last 16.
England also reached the Round of 16 after beating DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in a hard-fought victory. Head coach Thomas Tuchel made three changes to his starting lineup, bringing in Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon, while Jarell Quansah replaced Djed Spence at right-back.
Mexico, meanwhile, named an unchanged team from their win over Ecuador.
Soon after the match finally got underway, England midfielder Declan Rice received an early yellow card for a foul on Luis Romo. The game also saw a brief delay after Romo required treatment following the challenge.
The winner of the high-profile clash will face Norway in the quarterfinals on July 11. Norway secured their place in the last eight after a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals.
