India’s newly appointed T20 captain, Shreyas Iyer, has said that leading the national side will not change who he is, emphasizing that he has always enjoyed taking on challenges since childhood.
The 31-year-old batter was appointed captain of India’s T20 team on Saturday, replacing World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Speaking after being handed the responsibility, Iyer made it clear that he has no intention of altering his personality or trying to emulate anyone else.
“I don’t need to change my personality. I will remain the same person I have always been. I will not try to become someone else or live in someone’s shadow,” Iyer said.
Reflecting on his journey, the Mumbai-born cricketer said that growing up in a city where cricket is deeply competitive helped shape his mindset.
“Since childhood, I have enjoyed facing challenges. Being from Mumbai, where cricket is huge and competition is intense, every child dreams of playing for Mumbai,” he said.
Iyer also highlighted that his approach to the game has always been centered around winning, regardless of the opposition.
“Whenever I have played against anyone, my mindset has always been about winning — whether it is about learning or succeeding,” he added.
According to the new skipper, enjoying the sport while growing up helps develop a strong competitive spirit, which eventually pushes players to take greater responsibilities.
“The more you enjoy the game while growing up, the stronger your competitive spirit becomes, especially in cricket or any sport. I believe that takes you to the next level and makes you want to take responsibility. Now that I have been given this responsibility, it is a big challenge,” Iyer said.
