Pakistan-Made 'Goree Beauty Cream' Banned in India After Mercury Found, Health Concerns Raised

India has banned the sale of the Pakistan-manufactured Goree Beauty Cream after laboratory tests reportedly found the presence of mercury, a highly toxic heavy metal that can pose serious health risks.
The action follows complaints from several women in Nagpur, Maharashtra, who claimed they developed kidney-related health problems after using the fairness cream for an extended period. According to officials, some consumers had purchased the product through e-commerce platforms and had been applying it regularly for nearly two years.
Following the complaints, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tested samples of the cream. The investigation allegedly confirmed the presence of mercury, prompting authorities to impose a complete ban on the product in India.
Officials also found that the cream did not display an expiry date, raising further concerns over product safety and regulatory compliance.
The FDA has now launched a statewide enforcement drive to seize stocks of Goree Beauty Cream from retailers and distributors across Maharashtra. Authorities have also urged consumers not to purchase or use the product, warning that mercury exposure can lead to severe health complications, including kidney damage and other long-term toxic effects.
Health experts have long cautioned against using unregulated skin-lightening products, as some contain hazardous substances such as mercury or steroids. Prolonged exposure to mercury can affect the kidneys, nervous system, and other vital organs.
The crackdown is ongoing as authorities continue to trace the distribution network of the banned cream and prevent further sales.
