BSF Accelerates Smart Fencing Along India-Bangladesh Border in West Bengal
12-foot smart fencing, drones, thermal imaging, and advanced surveillance systems to strengthen border security across 172.6 km.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has intensified efforts to strengthen security along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal after the state's new government handed over 1,024.75 acres of land for border fencing projects.
The initiative is part of the Centre's strategy to curb illegal infiltration and cross-border smuggling. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly stated that no infiltrator would be allowed to enter India through the West Bengal border.
Construction is underway in several sensitive districts, including Murshidabad, Malda, North 24 Parganas, Cooch Behar, Nadia, South Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Uttar Dinajpur, and Jalpaiguri, covering nearly 172.6 kilometres of the international border.
In Murshidabad's Jalangi sector, one of the most vulnerable infiltration routes, BSF and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) are constructing a 12-foot-high single-layer fence. The project will be integrated with advanced surveillance technologies such as high-resolution CCTV cameras, thermal imagers, night-vision devices, drones, and sensor-based alert systems for real-time monitoring.
The Sundarbans, known for its dense mangrove forests and tidal waterways, will also receive nearly 90 kilometres of smart fencing. To strengthen surveillance in the riverine terrain, the BSF has deployed eight floating Border Out Posts (BOPs) supported by speed boats to monitor suspicious activities, infiltration attempts, and smuggling.
Officials say the project goes beyond conventional fencing by creating a technology-driven border security network capable of detecting threats quickly and improving response times. With land acquisition issues largely resolved, construction has gathered pace, marking a significant step toward enhancing security along the India-Bangladesh border.
