Supreme Court Takes Note of Closure of Supreme Court Metro Station Amid CJP Protest
CJI says the court will intervene if the metro station is not reopened by lunchtime; SCBA seeks access for lawyers, litigants, and court staff.
The Supreme Court on Thursday took cognisance of the closure of the Supreme Court Metro Station following the ongoing CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. Hearing concerns raised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Chief Justice of India (CJI) stated that if the station is not reopened by lunchtime, the court itself will intervene.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has temporarily closed the Supreme Court Metro Station along with 15 other metro stations across Delhi until further orders, citing security and law-and-order concerns arising from the protest.
During the proceedings, SCBA President Vikas Singh urged the court to allow advocates, litigants, and Supreme Court staff with valid access credentials to use the station. He proposed that those carrying Supreme Court proximity cards or valid entry passes be permitted to exit the station after undergoing proper security screening, while other passengers could continue to their next destination.
Responding to the request, the CJI said that the Supreme Court administration had already been instructed to engage with metro authorities to find a practical solution. He expressed hope that the issue would be resolved by lunchtime but made it clear that the court would step in if necessary.
The CJI also informed the court that a circular had been issued directing judges not to pass adverse orders in cases where lawyers are unable to appear due to the metro station closure.
Meanwhile, Vikas Singh said that if no administrative solution is reached, the matter may have to be considered on the judicial side.
