Pakistan Signals It Will Invite PM Modi for 2027 SCO Summit in Islamabad
As the host nation of the 2027 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit, Pakistan says it will invite all member states, including India, in line with SCO protocol.
New Delhi: Pakistan has indicated that it will formally invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the 2027 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which is scheduled to be held in Islamabad.
Speaking at a media briefing, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that, as the host country, Pakistan is obligated under SCO protocol to extend invitations to the heads of state and government of all member countries. This means that India will receive an official invitation for the summit.
The spokesperson emphasized that inviting all SCO members is a standard procedural requirement and not an exception. However, whether Prime Minister Modi will accept the invitation and travel to Pakistan remains uncertain.
During the same briefing, the spokesperson was also asked about the possibility of a meeting between India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan's foreign minister on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings in Manila. He said Pakistan had not received any request from India regarding such a meeting.
The 2027 SCO Summit is expected to be hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad as part of the organisation's rotational system, under which member states take turns chairing the Council of Heads of State (CHS) in alphabetical order.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, established on June 15, 2001, in Beijing, is a major Eurasian political, economic and security grouping. Its ten member states are China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus.
The annual SCO Summit serves as the organisation's highest decision-making forum, where leaders discuss regional security, economic cooperation and strategic issues affecting member nations.
