India Launches Weekly Insulin Therapy, Reducing Injections from 365 to 52 a Year

India has taken a significant step forward in diabetes care with the launch of Awiqli (Insulin Icodec), a once-weekly basal insulin developed by global healthcare company Novo Nordisk. With this new therapy, eligible patients may need just 52 insulin injections a year instead of 365 daily injections, offering a more convenient treatment option.

The medication is approved for adults aged 18 years and above living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes who require basal insulin therapy. By replacing daily basal insulin injections with a once-a-week regimen, the treatment aims to reduce the burden of frequent injections and improve patient adherence.

According to the company, clinical trials showed that Awiqli provides blood sugar control comparable to that of daily basal insulin while maintaining a similar safety profile. However, the therapy should only be started and used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

Medical experts believe the weekly insulin option could be particularly beneficial for patients who struggle with daily injections, making long-term diabetes management more convenient and potentially improving treatment compliance.
