From Empty Savings to Commonwealth Glory: David Mullarkey Scripts History for the Isle of Man

The bronze medal also marked the Isle of Man's first Commonwealth Games medal in any sport since Tim Kneale's shooting silver in 2018.

Speaking after the race, Mullarkey said the achievement meant more than personal success.

"To put the Isle of Man on the map in athletics is incredible. I hope this inspires the next generation of Manx athletes to believe they can achieve something similar," he said.

The road to the podium, however, was far from easy. After completing his collegiate career at Northern Arizona University in the United States, Mullarkey found himself without sponsorship or financial backing. Determined to continue chasing his dream, he relied entirely on his personal savings.

"I spent every penny I had to keep my dream alive. I told my parents that if my bank account reached zero, that would be the end of my athletics journey. Thankfully, it all worked out," Mullarkey recalled.

Now supported by Under Armour, the distance runner credits a change in mindset for his breakthrough season. Instead of focusing on medals, he concentrated on executing the perfect race and trusting the process.

His Commonwealth Games campaign isn't over yet. Mullarkey will return to the track for the men's 5,000m final, where he will aim to add another medal before representing Great Britain at the upcoming European Athletics Championships.
