Neeraj Chopra Wins Silver as Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage Strikes Gold in CWG 2026 Javelin Final
India celebrates a double podium finish as Neeraj Chopra claims silver and Yashvir Singh secures bronze in Glasgow.
India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra settled for the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after producing a season-best throw of 85.83m, while compatriot Yashvir Singh clinched bronze with a personal-best effort of 85.41m. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage stole the spotlight by winning the gold medal with a sensational 89.75m throw.
Neeraj began the final with an opening throw of 80.97m before improving significantly on his second attempt to take the lead with 85.83m, his best performance of the 2026 season. However, Pathirage responded immediately with a massive 89.75m effort that ultimately proved unbeatable.
Yashvir Singh delivered when it mattered most, producing a personal-best throw on his final attempt to leap into the bronze medal position and complete an impressive double podium finish for India. Fellow Indian Rohit Yadav finished seventh after failing to improve in the final rounds.
One of the biggest surprises of the event came with Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who was eliminated after the first three rounds following a disappointing best throw of 77.41m, missing out on the top eight.
The competition was held under difficult weather conditions, with strong winds and low temperatures affecting several athletes throughout the evening. Despite the challenging environment, Neeraj delivered his best throw of the season and secured his second Commonwealth Games medal after winning gold in 2018.
For India, the event ended on a positive note with two medals in the men's javelin throw, while Sri Lanka celebrated a historic victory as Rumesh Pathirage continued his outstanding 2026 season by adding the Commonwealth title to his growing list of achievements.
Final Podium:
Rumesh Pathirage (Sri Lanka) – 89.75m Neeraj Chopra (India) – 85.83m Yashvir Singh (India) – 85.41m
