Centre Approves ₹1,264 Crore Railway Project to Boost Karnataka–Andhra Pradesh Connectivity
Bellary–Guntakal rail section to get third and fourth lines, improving connectivity for 99 villages and enhancing freight capacity
The Union Government has approved a ₹1,264 crore railway project to strengthen rail connectivity between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The proposal, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, involves the construction of a third and fourth railway line on the Bellary–Guntakal rail section.
The project has been approved under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which aims to improve multimodal connectivity and streamline logistics infrastructure across the country.
According to the government, the multi-tracking project will pass through three districts in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and add approximately 46 kilometres to the Indian Railways network. Once completed, it is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity for around 99 villages with a combined population of nearly seven lakh people.
The enhanced rail infrastructure will also improve access to major tourist and religious destinations, including Bellary Fort and the Sri Kumaraswamy Temple.
The Bellary–Guntakal corridor is a key freight route used for transporting iron ore, dolomite, limestone, iron and steel, coal, fertilisers, and food grains. With the additional tracks, the route is expected to handle around 16.22 million tonnes of extra freight annually, easing congestion and improving operational efficiency.
The government also highlighted the project's environmental benefits. It estimates that the upgraded corridor will reduce crude oil imports by nearly 1.32 crore litres and cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 6.67 crore kilograms. This reduction is said to be equivalent to the environmental impact of planting around 27 lakh trees.
Officials said the project will improve the reliability of train services, reduce congestion on the existing route, lower logistics costs, and contribute to India's long-term sustainability goals.
