Bangladesh Vows to Continue Efforts to Bring Sheikh Hasina Back to Face Trial

Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaid Islam, has said the government will continue making every possible effort to bring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh to face ongoing legal proceedings.

Speaking to reporters in Dhaka, Shama Obaid said the extradition process began under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus and is now being carried forward by the current BNP-led government. She stressed that extradition is a legal and diplomatic process that follows established international standards and may take time.

The minister said that individuals convicted or facing legal proceedings can only be extradited in accordance with bilateral treaties and applicable international laws. However, she declined to comment on any legal hurdles or India's position regarding the extradition request.

Responding to recent remarks made by Sheikh Hasina, Shama Obaid said that statements from a fugitive should not influence ongoing legal or diplomatic procedures. Earlier, Hasina had described the charges against her, including her conviction and death sentence, as politically motivated.

Sheikh Hasina has been staying in India since August 5, 2024, after resigning as Bangladesh's prime minister following widespread anti-government protests. Protesters had stormed her official residence, prompting her to leave the country aboard a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft.

India has previously stated that Bangladesh's extradition request is under review in accordance with its domestic legal and judicial processes.
