CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Leads ‘Run for Yoga’ Event Ahead of International Yoga Day

Dehradun, June 19: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday participated in the ‘Run for Yoga’ programme organized at the Police Line in Dehradun ahead of the 12th International Day of Yoga.

Addressing participants, the Chief Minister said the event was more than just a run, describing it as a powerful campaign to promote healthy living, positive thinking, and the widespread adoption of yoga. He emphasized that the initiative aims to raise awareness about yoga and contribute to the creation of a healthier society.

Dhami noted that Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has historically been a center of yoga, spirituality, and meditation, where sages and saints practiced penance. He said the state's rich spiritual heritage and natural surroundings continue to inspire people towards a balanced, healthy, and positive lifestyle.

Calling yoga one of India’s greatest cultural treasures, the Chief Minister said it is a scientific and practical discipline that fosters harmony between the body, mind, and soul.

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for elevating yoga to the global stage. Following India's proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, June 21 was officially recognized as the International Day of Yoga. Today, millions of people in over 190 countries practice yoga as part of their daily lives.

Highlighting the growing challenges of stress, depression, and lifestyle-related health issues, Dhami said yoga has emerged as an effective tool for maintaining physical and mental well-being. He urged young people to make yoga and exercise a regular part of their daily routine, stating that healthy, energetic, and disciplined youth are key to building a stronger nation.

The Chief Minister also reiterated the state government's commitment to establishing Uttarakhand as a global center for yoga, Ayurveda, wellness, and natural healing. Through the state's new Yoga Policy, the government is encouraging the development of yoga and meditation centers, supporting yoga instructors, and creating employment opportunities in the wellness sector.

Appealing to citizens to embrace yoga in their daily lives, Dhami called for collective efforts towards a healthy, disciplined, and drug-free society. He expressed confidence that Uttarakhand’s youth would play a vital role in transforming yoga into a mass movement and contributing to the state's growth and prosperity.

Several dignitaries, including Cabinet Minister Madan Kaushik, MLA Vinod Chamoli, Dehradun Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal, Ayush Secretary Ranjana Rajguru, Dehradun District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan, and Senior Superintendent of Police Parmendra Dobal, were present at the event.
