Fresh Trouble for TMC: Kalyan Banerjee Refuses to Represent Abhishek Banerjee in Calcutta High Court

The troubles for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, appear to be mounting as senior leaders and lawmakers continue to distance themselves from the party. In a fresh setback, four-time Lok Sabha MP and senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee has refused to represent TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the Calcutta High Court.

The case pertains to an alleged signature mismatch involving MLAs and a petition challenging a CID summons. The plea also seeks interim protection against stringent police action, including possible arrest. On Thursday, advocate Ayan Bhattacharya represented Abhishek Banerjee before Justice Kaushik Chanda’s single-judge vacation bench.

During the hearing of Abhishek Banerjee’s petition challenging the CID summons in the MLA signature verification case, Kalyan Banerjee did not appear before the court.

Speaking to the media, Kalyan Banerjee said that his decision not to represent Abhishek Banerjee was not limited to this case alone but extended to all future legal matters involving him. He alleged that Abhishek’s “arrogant behaviour” towards him was the primary reason behind the decision.

Kalyan Banerjee further claimed that despite being one of the key figures allegedly responsible for the Trinamool Congress’s poor performance in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, Abhishek Banerjee’s attitude had not changed.

“Abhishek Banerjee has ruined the party, but his arrogance remains unchanged,” Kalyan Banerjee reportedly said while speaking to the media.

He also revealed that after urgently mentioning the case before Justice Chanda’s bench and securing an early hearing, Abhishek Banerjee allegedly informed his son that another lawyer, junior to him in the legal profession, would represent him during the hearing.

“Last night, he called my son and said someone else would appear for him in court. I have decided to stay away from all legal matters related to Abhishek Banerjee,” Kalyan Banerjee said.

Later, it emerged that Kalyan Banerjee’s son, Shirshanya Banerjee, who is also a practicing lawyer, along with his junior associates, would no longer be involved in any legal proceedings concerning Abhishek Banerjee.

In a sharp message to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kalyan Banerjee urged her to choose between Abhishek Banerjee and leaders who have remained loyal to the party.

“I have been in the legal profession for the last 45 years. I will not tolerate Abhishek Banerjee’s arrogance. Mamata Banerjee must decide between him and those who are still loyal to her,” he said, blaming Abhishek for the current state of the Trinamool Congress.
