Former West Bengal CM to attend INDIA bloc meeting on June 8 with Abhishek Banerjee as TMC grapples with major internal rebellion after election defeat
New Delhi | June 3, 2026 After losing power in the West Bengal Assembly elections, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is now facing one of the biggest political crises of her career. With an internal rebellion threatening to split the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mamata is set to travel to Delhi to attend the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled for June 8, accompanied by her nephew and TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The political turmoil within the TMC has intensified after suspended MLA Sandipan Saha led a rebel faction to the state Assembly, claiming support for Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition. The rebel camp has reportedly claimed backing from more than 50 TMC MLAs, while several reports suggest the number of dissident legislators could be as high as 60 out of the party’s 80 MLAs.
This development comes at a crucial time for Mamata Banerjee, who is struggling to maintain control over the party she built. Following the party’s defeat in the Bengal Assembly elections, the TMC had officially announced Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition. However, the rebellion by a large section of MLAs has thrown the decision into uncertainty, raising questions about the party’s unity and future direction.
Despite the ongoing crisis in Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate in the INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on June 8. The gathering will bring together top opposition leaders and is being seen as a significant political event after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Although the INDIA alliance held a virtual meeting last year, this will be the first major in-person gathering of opposition leaders in recent times. Political observers believe the meeting could play a key role in determining the future strategy of the opposition alliance.
Interestingly, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also hosted INDIA bloc leaders for a dinner meeting in August 2025, where discussions reportedly revolved around issues such as the Vice Presidential election, voter list irregularities, and alleged electoral manipulation.
As Mamata Banerjee battles an internal revolt in West Bengal, her appearance at the INDIA bloc meeting will be closely watched, especially amid growing speculation over the future of both the TMC and the opposition alliance.
