Egypt's Mostafa Ziko Alleges World Cup Bias After Dramatic Defeat to Argentina

Egypt forward Mostafa Ziko has sparked controversy after accusing match officials of bias following his team's heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The Pharaohs looked set for one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after taking a commanding 2-0 lead. However, defending champions Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback, with Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández scoring within 13 minutes to seal a place in the quarter-finals.

A major turning point came early in the second half when Ziko found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out following a VAR review. Officials determined that the Egyptian forward had committed a foul in the build-up. Although Ziko later scored Egypt's second goal, the disallowed strike became the biggest talking point after the match.

Speaking after the final whistle, an emotional Ziko questioned the officiating and alleged that the tournament was being manipulated.

"There was clear and obvious injustice. The referee was against us from the beginning. It wasn't allowed for us to leave as 2-0 winners against Argentina. The tournament is fixed," Ziko said, while also apologising to Egyptian supporters.

Egypt had taken the lead in the 15th minute through Yasser Ibrahim. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir then produced a brilliant penalty save to deny Lionel Messi and made several key stops to keep Argentina at bay before halftime.

After Ziko doubled Egypt's advantage in the 67th minute, Argentina mounted an incredible fightback. Romero headed home in the 79th minute, Messi equalised four minutes later with a powerful strike, and Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time winner.

Argentina's victory sends the defending champions into the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland after their penalty shootout win over Colombia.
